After a Europe-wide competitive tendering procedure, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has nominated the enercity Contracting GmbH for the supply of the newly developed eastern part of the HafenCity with thermal heat through renewable energies.
Due to the fact that 80% of the heating supply is supposed to come from renewable sources as stated in the tender requirements, the enercity Contracting GmbH decided to extract ca. 1500 kW heat from the smelting processes of the copper smelter Aurubis AG.
Up to now, the Aurubis AG had to use a complex procedure to release the produced process heat into the river Elbe. By means of several process modifications, the heat capacity mentioned above can now be made available in a district heating system and can be transported to the eastern part of the HafenCity. In order to achieve this, a district heating pipeline route with a length of ca. 3.5 km and a dimension of DN 500/670 has to be constructed.
A joint venture lead-managed by the Friedrich Vorwerk KG in Tostedt was commissioned with the construction of this district heating pipeline route. Apart from the laying of the pipeline in the conventional open-cut construction method, complicated special crossings of the Peutekanals and the Marktkanals as siphon structures have to be carried out. The center piece of the pipeline system is the crossing of the Norderelbe in the course of which the steel pipes are inserted into the existing bridge girders of the Elbbrücken. As a next step, the steel pipes are coated with a sheet-jacket-insulation.
The crossings north and south of the Elbbrücken will be carried out in a pipe jacking procedure in order not to affect traffic on the heavily frequented B75. Subsequently, the district heating lines will be pulled into the jacked pipes and will therefore close the gap to the interconnection point in the Zweibrückenstraße.
With a total order volume of ca. 12 million € and a scheduled construction period up to October 2018, our company is yet again involved in a challenging project of the energy revolution.
