In line with our corporate mission “driving the clean energy transition" VORWERK, together with the VW Group and the City of Wolfsburg, is laying the foundation for a completely CO2-neutral hydrogen economy for the industrial sector. The construction of a 33 km long H2-ready pipeline will, in a first step allow for the quick shift from the current coal-based energy supply to considerably more emission-friendly natural gas. In a second step, hydrogen will replace natural gas as the primary energy source and hence contribute to achieving the European climate goals.
Torben Kleinfeldt, CEO of the VORWERK Group: "With Gasunie's H2-ready project for the VW Group as well as the City of Wolfsburg, we have again proven our position as a leading partner of the energy industry. In addition to our engineering competence, we also benefit from our know-how in the field of HDD drilling, which allows us to independently handle even complex projects of this kind".
With the start of the project in October 2020, work began on the most important new gas infrastructure project for Lower Saxony, which is expected to be completed in winter 2022/23.
During signing of the contract Jens Schumann, Managing Director of Gasunie Deutschland, acknowledged the role of the project and the companies involved: "Only with a high degree of professionalism, environmental and safety awareness we can take the necessary steps towards a secure and CO2-emission friendly energy supply. Together we want to create the conditions for the VW Group to rapidly convert its two coal-fired power stations at the Wolfsburg site to considerably more emission-friendly natural gas and thus relieve the climate".
