The German government has decided to shut down coal-fired power plants with a capacity of 12.5 gigawatts by the end of 2022, in addition to the planned shutdown of around 9 gigawatts of nuclear power.
Due to the resulting loss of power generation capacity, Federal Minister of Economics Altmaier believes that Germany will have to make greater use of gas power plants.
Altmaier commented: "I am very confident that gas-fired power plants will replace the coal-fired capacities that will be lost in the next two to five years - at affordable costs".
